Many people wrinkle their nose from the phrase "personal brand". Before their eyes immediately appears a picture of a merry empty-headed salesman who vparivaet himself all around without need. But this is not so. I will share my opinion on why a personal brand is important for IT people and tell you how to maintain it even with minimal effort.
For almost two years I have been producing copyright educational programs for IT-specialists. I work mainly with people who are aware of why they need added value. Our teachers want to not only transfer knowledge and be part of the community, but also pick up points in their goodwill.
However, not all experts who come to our school to teach understand that they will be given such self-promotion, what is the use of it and how to move forward correctly. Let's start with the main one.

Why do I need a personal brand
1. It makes it easier to find you as a specialist to a HR or recruiter. You are easier to find, difficult to lose and impossible to refuse.
I think that HeadHunter is already becoming, like Classmates, for all the oak guys. Recruiters have not lived in one HH for a long time, and when searching for candidates, he does not take first place.
2. A personal brand allows you to grow connections , and networking is our everything. At a minimum, life becomes more interesting, and most importantly, you gather useful contacts.
3. Impression is a powerful thing. .
You are after all looking for people in social networks before meeting with them? I have not met a single person who does not surf on Facebook or LinkedIn before the meeting. Even if you are so unique, a recruiter or unit manager of a potential partner/employer will look for you. Therefore, a personal brand is an opportunity to set the tone for your image in advance and increase the likelihood of tuning to your own side in some matters.
These are just the main reasons to think about your personal brand, you may have some more of your own. For example, someone may just have itchy itching, and someone might be interested in being a blogger.
Of course, you should not think that all this will give you + 300% of the exhaust in terms of additional cost, but you will benefit in any case. Especially since

And the best part is that for it’s not necessary to even strain. Sometimes simple actions are enough to just maintain a certain image and demonstrate their activity, but more on that later.
And what often happens when a personal brand is formed by itself, you just need to direct and adjust this process. For example, one of my acquaintances distributes American software for engineers in Russia. At work, he is forced to speak a lot and train people, so his recognition among potential clients is inevitably growing. The personal brand came for him himself and he can only adjust his social networks in order to receive adequate offers from recruiters and offers for cooperation.

1. Guys who love extremes.
"Nonsense is everything, idle talk, arrrghh!" - they say alone. “I am a star!” - others say. This article is not for them. The former are basically impossible to please, while the latter need slightly different tools.
2. You are aware of the benefits, but you feel that this is not for you. You have no time, you do not understand what can be done, and it’s difficult for you to shine.
Basically I meet just such guys. They just don't want to strain because of all this. They do not like to lead social networks, but at the same time they want to make their digital image decent for the professional sphere, setting it in the right way. If this is about you, read on. I’ll tell you how to maintain a personal brand without straining.
3. The guys who want to show themselves are active, dynamic, outgoing. Their goal is not just to clean your image, but to manage it specifically.

Social & GitHub
Trite? Yes. But let's get to the point.
1. IT recruiters are recruiting and hunting machines. They often don’t get the meaning of what is in the resume, and just look for some metrics to at least somehow appreciate you.
In this case, the keywords in your posts and... followers on GitHub are important. At one of the conferences I heard from a recruiter: “If you have one subscriber on a github, it’s good, two are better, three or more - you should be taken.”
I recommend not neglecting this and laying out everything you have.
2. "Oh my god, again social networks!" Most likely your accounts are closed.
Do not worry. If you are lazy and have no time, do it DRY. For example, you were at a conference, went there, ate buns, listened to smart people and came across a photographer. Take a photo, post on LinkedIn and write “Conference” + name. ALL. Here is your personal brand.
Another example: surfing on the news, I liked the note from your professional area - repost. These are minimal efforts that will not tire you at all, but at the same time help set the tone for your digital image.
Often the question arises whether to remove ridiculous and personal photos. It all depends on the degree of their absurdity and personality. Show your life - not bad. It can be your family, life on travel, vacation. But Sabantuy with classmates is probably better to hide only if they are not from the gurus of your area.
Try going to a professional conference. Believe me, if your topic is frankly not very, you will not be allowed. Committees usually work very professionally; smart people sit there. They will not only discuss the topic with you, but will also give suggestions, tell you how to prepare. After correction and discussion of the topic, you are preparing a plan. Talking with them again. Then prepare a speech and so on, until the rehearsal.
Conferences are a large venue and strong networking with relatively well-established processes. And at most conferences, speeches are free, and super-cool speakers are generally paid for accommodation and flights. Speaking at conferences is fun and not at all painful, even though at first it’s scary. I recommend it.
My favorite part. About 15 years ago, it was still believed that some people teach, while others work. Now there is an opportunity to make education more targeted and “correct” by the standards of practitioners, focused on experience and “real” life. Online schools allow you to combine two roles and direct the student on the true path, to show him, so to speak, real life.
When I interviewed our teachers why they teach, all as one pointed out also networking and raising awareness in their field.
Students often turn to them with their work tasks and ask for a consultation. But in our school, students are not little boys and girls who "get a ticket to life." These are usually bearded uncles and serious aunts, who sometimes occupy leadership positions and may even offer you a project or “put in a word.”

At the same time, teaching is not such a difficult craft as it seems at first glance.Online courses in any schools are never taught entirely by a single teacher. As a rule, there is one course developer and the rest who just teach and test DZ.
You can start with a simple one - take one or two lessons to taste and understand the essence. And do not worry that will not work. But there’s one catch in blogging: this is suitable only for stubborn, hardworking people who like to show themselves. After all, there will be difficulties such as searching for topics, the regularity of posts, analysis of what comes in and what doesn’t, promotion... And if someone writes that you’re not very happy and your posts are dull? And if he justifies it? And if there are many? In general, we have to work with this. Work with people's opinions and mistakes.
If all this doesn’t scare you, then a blog is a very good field of work, a good hobby that can really be scaled into an additional project. Real, but not easy, it takes time. Themes will work out, the style will come, marketing too.
To begin, in any case, is simple: choose a convenient site, an interesting topic and write-write-write (well, or shoot, shoot, shoot).
A personal brand is needed not only for those people who want to make themselves known, it is primarily a matter of the purity of the digital footprint and the first impression of themselves. And if you are an IT specialist with ambitions, then you simply need a personal brand.
You can support your personal brand in a variety of ways, from simple posting of photos from conferences to teaching and blogging. It all depends on how much time you are willing to devote to this. Even lazy people can remain attractive in the eyes of recruiters and potential partners.
